Emergencies

In case of an ‘emergency’ or when the surgery is closed, you have below options available to you:

 If your problem is an emergency or life threatening, please call 999.

Out of hours contact number for the practice – the contact number is the surgery number 0191 5026710. Your call will be transferred automatically to a call handling service. Your details will be taken and you will be advised on the best option available. If you need to be seen and treated by a GP you will either be visited if your condition warrants it or given an appointments for the Out of Hours Service.

For minor injuries and illnesses you can attend the Primary Care Walk In Centre  at Bunny Hill, Hylton Lane, Downhill, SR5 4BW  0191 5195800 The minor injuries and illnesses unit offers treatment to adults and children aged 2 years and over. Children under 2 years can either be seen by their GP or attend A&E when appropriate. Examples of minor injuries / illnesses that can be treat include:

Straightforward, uncomplicated broken bones (knee, ankle, foot and toes)(shoulders, elbow, wrist, hands and fingers)

  • Sprains / strains
  • Minor cuts and grazes
  • Minor burns and scalds
  • Urine problems
  • Rashes
  • Sore throats / coughs
  • Earache
  • Dog bites

You will initially be seen by a nurse who will assess you and if they are able to treat you, you will then be seen by a Nurse Practitioner. There are x-ray facilities on site. If your condition is more serious then they will arrange for you to be seen at A&E.

You should attend A&E if you have a life threatening emergency or serious accident. If necessary you may need to call 999 to transport you. Examples of medical emergencies or serious accidents are:

  • Complex or complicated broken bones
  • Chest pain
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Unconsciousness
  • Severe loss of blood
  • Severe burns or scalds
  • Choking
  • Fitting or concussion
  • Drowning
